This week we are starting a new blog series about the signals of clothing – starting with T-shirts. Keep reading to find out what a T-shirt says about you.
To understand the signals you are sending by wearing a T-shirt it’s important to know it’s history. The history is a big part of what you associate it with. It’s the associations and symbolics that determine what wearing a T-shirt says about you.
The T-shirt is derived from men’s underwear. The T-shirt is simplified clothing. It used to be worn underneath a uniform. Now it is the uniform of casual clothing. It wasn’t socially acceptable to wear a T-shirt in public until the sixties.
The name of the T-shirt comes from the fact that it’s shaped like the letter T.
A T-shirt with a loose fit is casual. Wearing a T-shirt with a pair of jeans is very effortless. It looks like you’re not trying too hard which sends out the signal that things come easy to you. And that you are easy-going.
T-shirts are often used to send out messages. It can be a political message letting everyone know where you stand politically and that you are politically engaged.
A witty message shows your humor.
A souvenir T-shirt says where you have been in the world. For example the well known “I ❤️ NY” T-shirt reveals that you have visited New York.
“I’ve always thought of the T-shirt as the Alpha and Omega of the fashion alphabet” – Giorgio Armani
“There are all different kinds of elegance. It can be silk, it can be a T-shirt” – Donatella Versace
